Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Company
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Space Design Incorporated was retained by Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Company to conduct departmental programming studies and personnel projections, determine space requirements based on these studies, and assist in their building selection process. Additionally, we provided professional space planning, architectural, and interior design services for the relocation to the newly renovated Curtis Center. The client's objectives were to house its staff of over 150 people on a single floor, provide for future expansion, and maintain a center city location and profile.
With a building footprint of approximately 70,000 square feet per floor, the Curtis Center accommodated these requirements and could provide the flexibility for expansion on the same floor. The client requested that the executive area be isolated from their general office and staff area. This was achieved by utilizing the building's primary elevator/service core, which divides the space into a 12,000 square foot executive section and a remaining 28,000 square foot area for general offices and staff areas. The executive office suites of the Curtis Publication Company were restored to their original magnificence and are occupied by the executives of the present firm. The main boardroom was centrally located within the executive area and incorporates the grand fan window, one of the building's primary architectural features. Systems and office furniture selections were based upon the wood theme, which served as a unifying design concept.
The employee lunchroom/kitchen serves as the central feature of the staff area and incorporates the balcony that overlooks the atrium and main fountain of the building, creating a unique and pleasant environment for the employees.
The art collection on display was created by local artists and reflects a Philadelphia regional and cultural theme.
